Chapter 11: MARY SPEAKS

Awesome, thinks Mary. It feels like period cramps, but not terrible. She has been lying back in the bathtub, gazing at the rubber duck perched on top of the round island of her belly. Every so often, her stomach muscles tighten, which makes duck and abdomen rise a little higher above the water. When that happens, she focuses on the little orange beak and she breathes, slow and regular, like that friend of Violet's showed her. It feels peaceful, just the way it should.

Soon the baby will be out here for all to see. Soon she will know whether it’s a boy or girl that has been growing inside her. She hopes it will show its extraordinariness right away, that it will have amazing healing powers. She can imagine how that will be, people coming and the baby’s hands exuding light rays, like in movies.

Even now, the baby is not letting labor hurt her. These contractions are nothing like they told her to expect, not even as uncomfortable as sometimes when the baby is sitting on her bladder. She does not remember anything from Bible class about Jesus’ birth hurting his mother. From the moment at Violet’s house when that little girl with asthma pressed against her and stopped wheezing, she has been less scared. Violet and she practiced breathing one evening, but maybe now she doesn’t need to do anything special, because she is blessed.

And what kind of person will it turn out to be? Will the baby talk right away, like Jesus did? Or was that just some story she heard at Sunday school: ‘Up spoke baby Jesus, from in Mary’s womb. Joseph gather me some cherries.’ No, that was a line from a song. But how does anyone really know what happened way back then when they didn't have video?

If Doctor Bob is right about the clone thing, the baby will be like her twin, except perfect. Because this baby is the product of an immaculate conception. She already knows it likes music as much as she does because when she played the flute, the baby heard and decided to be born. This was what Violet’s midwife friend had explained, when it is ready to come out, the baby makes you secrete hormones and they make your belly contract. They will listen to music together, all kinds, she won’t be like her parents with their lists of what is right and wrong music.

Mary turns on the tap again, wanting more hot water. She can hear sounds outside the bathroom, people’s voices in the splashing, but that isn’t her business. Her low back likes the heat. Here it comes again, focus on the yellow ducky, slow breath in, longer, now press the breath out even more. She wonders if the baby will play with it, with all those toys they’ve given her.
